AIPET is a professional and regulatory body of individual and institutional members which has four general categories of membership:

1.    STUDENT MEMBERS are students who have successfully completed one year of study in engineering at a University or University of Technology.
2.    ASSOCIATES are persons technical or non-technical in possession of educational qualifications of matriculation level, who are involved in engineering, but do not qualify for election to the grade of Member but would benefit from membership and those who are progressing through continuing education and experience towards the qualifications for Member.
3.    MEMBERS of the Institute are persons in possession of a degree in electrical engineering from a  African Universities or other approved University, or 3 years of successful study in engineering at such a University, or acquisition of diploma of at least s4 level from a  African University of Technology or other approved institution, coupled with a certain amount of experience. Special conditions apply to persons qualified other than inl engineering, but involved with electrical engineering, as well as persons of standing over the age of 40, who have demonstrated competence in the profession.
4.    SENIOR MEMBERS of the Institute are those persons who are active as an engineer, scientist, educationalist, or technical executive in the field of electrical engineering, who have had at least 10 years experience after obtaining the level of qualification for the grade of Member and shall have demonstrated significant performance over a period of at least 5 of those years.
5.    FELLOWS are Senior Members of at least 5 years standing who have had at least 5 years of superior responsibility and leadership in electrical engineering and have made an important contribution to electrical engineering.

Application for membership will be submitted to the Secretary General, who, after determining eligibility, will then submit the application to the Officers for approval. Membership is effective from the date the application is approved by the Officers.

AIPET members will be expected to promote the objectives of the institute. The members shall:
1.    encourage membership and active participation in AIPET of eligible organizations;
2.    participate in the election of Executive Committee members;
3.    accept assignments in ad hoc committees and special interest groups of AIPET;
4.    utilize the communication channels of AIPET;
5.    support AIPET’ publications by contributing articles;
6.    contribute to the dissemination of information regarding engineering education worldwide;
7.    engage in other activities to further the purposes of the institute

Annual fees for the different classes of membership will be proposed by the Executive Committee and approved by a majority vote of the affected organizations in the Assembly of Members.

Any member may withdraw from AIPET by informing the Secretary General or the President in writing. Withdrawal will take effect at the end of the existing term of the withdrawing organization’s membership, or at any earlier date specified by the withdrawing organization.

Termination of membership in AIPET may be effected by the Executive Committee with immediate effect if a member, after a written reminder, has failed to pay the annual membership fee within one year of the date due or if a member does not comply with these bylaws, or is otherwise determined by the Executive Committee to have acted in a manner harmful to the objectives of AIPET. Following the termination of membership, the terminated member has the right to appeal to the Member Assembly, which can be contacted by the Secretariat via e-mail.

Any member withdrawing or terminated from AIPET relinquishes any rights to AIPET assets.

Categories of Membership
A candidate for election to any grade of membership shall be engaged in an activity and possess scientific knowledge or practical experience which qualifies the candidate to cooperate with educators and engineers in the advancement of engineering education knowledge and practice.
•    Members shall have the privileges of representing themselves as Members and of wearing the emblem of membership, shall also have the privileges of nominating and voting for officers and the privileges that are common to all classes of membership. They shall also have the privileges of holding office and of voting on amendments to this Constitution.
•    Honorary members can be appointed upon the proposal of the Board and approval of the council.
•    Corporate members which will be for organizations.

Eligibility for Membership, Application and Selection
•    The Board decides on the admittance of members.
•    Any eligible person shall become a member of the institute on payment to the AIPET of the appropriate membership fee, the amount of which shall be determined by the council  on recommendation of the Board.
•    An applicant shall subscribe to the Constitution of the AIPET and to its Code of Ethics upon acceptance of membership.

Termination of membership
•    The membership expires when a member resigns of his/her own free will. Notification to the Board is necessary to leave the Society, one month before the cycle of the current year at the latest.
•    The institute  may suspend, take disciplinary action or terminate a member’s membership. The exclusion of a member occurs when:
o    a member’s behaviour disrupts the mutual agreement, and acts in opposition to the statutes as well as to the resolutions passed at the council,
o    a member disregards the interests of the institute and when the goals and reputation of the institute get damaged because of the member’s action,
o    a member has been behind schedule with the payment of the membership fee for two years, or
o    a member is removed from an office of trust by a court of law or is convicted of an offence for which the sentence is imprisonment without the option of a fine.

Rights and duties of members
•    Full members have the right to participate in the biennial general meetings with the right to vote.
•    Members have the right to bring in proposals to assign to the Board.
•    All members are obliged to respect the laws and bylaws of the institute, and to handle their goals to the best of their ability.
•    The members are committed to the payment of a membership fee which is payable by the end of the current year.
•    Please note that our constitution states general nominations of board positions, with the board then identifying specific portfolios for each board member once they have been voted in. The only specified nominated position then would be for President.
